Stakes and innovations

Nutricia believes in the power of nutrition to make a positive and proven difference to the health of patients. Therefore we focus our time and energy on developing and delivering new nutritional solutions for patients that meet both their existing and emerging health needs.

“In the 21st century, we will see a shift from a majority of communicable diseases to a majority of nutrition and diet-related diseases, making nutrition much more critical to our health and well-being than in the past.” Flemming Morgan

Nutricia Advanced Medical Nutrition’s mission is to pioneer nutritional discoveries for longer, healthier lives. This leads us to focus on research and development in specific disease areas, in close collaboration with specialist healthcare professionals. We deliver nutritional products and services that are adapted to each specific stage of a patient’s journey.

Nutricia introduced a breakthrough innovation in 2016 in its pediatric nutrition business, adding to its Neocate range of amino-acid based products for the dietary management of cow’s milk allergy. Neocate
Syneo is the first and only hypoallergenic formula containing a unique blend of both prebiotics and probiotics, designed to help support the development of a balanced gut microbiota in infants suffering from cow’s milk allergy, multiple food allergies, and related gastrointestinal conditions.

The product was launched successfully in the United States in 2016, where as many as 5% of children suffer from cow’s milk allergy. In addition to its research to deliver disease-specific nutritional support, Nutricia recognizes that a positive patient experience of taste and the pleasure of eating is important to help patients comply with their medically prescribed nutritional regimen. For instance, persistent food allergies in children sometimes require long-term dietary management, while products need to be tasty and offer variety to ensure continued appeal. In 2016, Nutricia introduced Neocate Junior in Europe, with improved taste and an optimized nutritional profile.

Nutricia has also forged ties with the Alicia Foundation, a center for scientific and culinary research dedicated to promoting healthier eating that also focuses on cuisine adapted to the specific needs of patients using medical nutrition products. For one Catalonian hospital, the Foundation has developed meals with all the flavors of paella, a local specialty, specifically for patients suffering from swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). It is prepared using Nutilis, a thickening product from Nutricia.

Science sits at the very heart of Nutricia. We have a world-class research and development facility in Utrecht (The Netherlands) where scientists are working to deliver evidence-based, specialised nutrition for infants, young children, adults and the elderly.

Examples of research and development being conducted right now include the development of innovative products to meet the needs of frail elderly patients, research into the optimal management of infants with cow's milk allergy and research into the role of nutrition to help patients in the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Nutricia sees the world through the eyes of the patients who use our products and healthcare professionals who prescribe them. It’s only through appreciating their needs that we believe we can provide the necessary support and solutions. By working closely with healthcare professionals, Nutricia has been at the forefront of product innovation, ideas that have helped patients better adhere to their medically recommended regimen. For example we make nutritional supplements for the elderly easier to use and take, through the development of “compact” formats. This means reducing the volume while maintaining the nutritional density needed by frail patients. Fortimel Compact was the very first product made available in this format, packing the nutritional benefits of a 200 ml drink into just 125 ml, ideal for patients who struggle with large volumes.

Nutricia specialises in the delivery of foods for special medical purposes for patients with specific nutritional needs. Science is at the very heart of our nutrition and health commitment. Thus we focus our skills and resources to deliver evidence-based, specialised nutrition to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly, that meets their specific needs.

In paediatric care, we have developed a range of highly specialised nutritional products for children with inborn errors of metabolism, faltering growth or cow’s milk allergy. Furthermore, Nutricia organises events where families can connect with each other as well as support services to help families living with these medical conditions on a daily basis.

As our population ages, many more people are becoming vulnerable to the effects of old age, including frailty and disease. At Nutricia we offer healthy and balanced nutrition to frail elderly patients, a key factor for their overall care. Our offering also includes products and services to support healthcare providers and patients in the dietary management of chronic disease like cancer and stroke

Nutricia’s efforts to pioneer nutritional discoveries are also focused on taste. The taste of medical nutrition products considerably influences patient compliance with treatment, for both children and adults.

Our nutritional supplements for children with severe food allergies are produced in a variety of flavours such as fruit 'smoothies', in chocolate and vanilla flavours, helping children to accept the constraints of their diet. The products are also presented in small and colourful pouches, helping young patients to focus less on the 'medical' aspect of their diets.

Another example is MyNutilis, a dedicated website for patients with difficulty swallowing (known as dysphagia). Visitors to MyNutilis can watch videos that explain how to prepare a range of recipes using Nutilis, a thickener that adapts the consistency of food and drink and is used under medical supervision for people with swallowing difficulties.

Our products are only one aspect of the care process: patients and their families also need help, support and reassurance to cope with these medical conditions. Nutricia recently launched Neocate Footsteps in the USA, where 5% of children suffer from cow’s milk protein allergy. A digital platform designed for doctors and the parents of these children, Neocate Footsteps helps clinicians and families manage the child’s condition day to day, including: insurance, dietary guidelines and recipes, contact with nutritionists and other families, practical advice as the child enters daycare, begins school or simply goes on an outing.
